Faye Heine Baker Russia is huge, depends on which part of Russia she lived in and which part of Germany she was from - there is a Slav minority in Germany, too, if I remember correctly (and I dont mean recent immigrants, but separate Slav nation Sorbian - not Serbian)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavs this article is not bad :)

Slavorum well you forgotten mention Slovakia to plum dumplings (because 'knedla' it isn't there) plus if you are trying to shed some light into a very complicated issue of Slav dishes, do more homework. Thumbs up for mentioning some lovely tasty and much more healthy sweet dishes here! However, you missed just too many...I can think of at least five right now. Some ready in half hour. I have hardly met a child which refused :)

To add to your general Slavic confusion (at least what I managed to read from this thread), one comment to your 'knedla', this plum dumpling dish is made also in Slovakia where it is not called 'knedla' but 'slivkove gule = literally plum balls'...'knedla' is a kind of dumpling you eat with pork and stewed cabbage...i think names are irrelevant as all our languages have bits and pieces taken from each other, I always have a laugh talking to friends from other Slav background because being Slovakian, whom grew on Czech children stories and learned compulsory Russian at school, Polish at ski holidays, I found I can understand almost every Slav language a little. I also found that some words we use are the same but have different meanings in different Slav languages or even that some very old fashioned words, hardly used today are common in say, Bulgarian :)))
