I don’t know how it came to be, maybe someone on the forum is a linguist, but I think there are more examples in Slavic world. In Slovak diphthong ô (uo) can sound like that. In some dialects past forms in masculine genus end with a soft V instead of L, I’m talking about Slovak in Serbia e.g. “bov” instead of “bol” (past form of be) @Sviatogor doesn’t Belorussian “ў” represent similar sound?
