Yes, I understand both versions you have written, but that may be because I have been exposed to Serbian and Croatian languages also.  We don’t really say “On” (masc) and “Ona” (fem), but I think we understand it.  It would be “Toy” (masc) and “Taya” (fem) in most cases.  One of the confusing items I found with Bulgarian was the use of the word “shte” instead of “ke” used in Macedonian-slavic or greek slavophone.  For example, we would say “ke odish/odat za voda?” for “will you go for water?”, and I understand Bulgarian would be “shte otide za voda?” or something similar. “ke” is replaced with “shte”.
