So I have a new discovery…I contacted a genealogist in Slovakia and asked him if he can find out information about my original surname Pilisi. And this is what he explained…

Pilisi was actually a “nickname” that evolved into my family’s surname! (Which was quite common for this to happen to families) My supposedly actual surname was Chovanyecz/Chovanec. Which makes since because it was my great grandfather’s middle name on some records. Incredible!!!
Also the family was Greek Catholic so I suppose that means they were Rusyn or Rusnaks.

But I do know that I have relatives still living in the village where my great grandfather was born and they speak Slovak.
