Further confusing things is that in Bulgarian “shto” is also used as a slang/shortened form of “zashto”, meaning “why”. So it depends on context – “Не се гаси туй що не гасне” (“You can’t extinguish what can’t be extinguished”), “Що не си гледаш работата?” (“Why don’t you mind your own business?”), “Що години съм видял!” (“How many years I’ve seen”) and even “… що се отнася до…” (“… as far as [something is concerned]…”).
