Toma Bakač Erdedi (1558.–1624.) was also the Ban of Croatia, and during the siege of Sisak relieved the garrison, and won the first battle against the Turks in 100 years of the war. The Turkish army besieged Sisak with 12,000-35,000 men, without any declaration of war and breaking the piece treaty of Adrianople. The garrison bombarded the Turks with cannons inflicting heavy casualties, and Toma Erdedi brought in a relieve force of 5,000 men. The Turks started retreating frantically, and caught between two flanks and a river, were slaughtered and drowned. The Turkish army supposedly had 8,000-20,000 losses, and the Croatian army only 50.
