@KnezIvan Geography is important, but not as much as technology. Pit-houses on the Balkans were massively used throughout the whole Middle ages. Not earlier (unless we go back to the Neolithic), and later only in some areas, so it’s safe to say they were brought by the Slavs, otherwise it wouldn’t make sense for the locals to revert back to more primitive structures. The cities of course retained their more ‘civilised’ appearance, so as a result two quite different types of architecture co-existed within the same space and time, it’s just that the populations that used them had different levels of skill and knowledge.
