In Belarusian ‘smardz’ is known as ‘smaržok’. It seems ‘smar’ is the root of the words. So both names appear to be etymologically the same.

Other names for borowik/baravik in Belarusian are ‘kalasavik’ (early baravik) or ščyry (szczery in Polish) hryb.
