I think we should rename the Balkan Penninsula to "Peninsula of Haemus". Which is the ancient Greek name for the area. Balkan is Turkish for wooded mountain range or something.

I doubt in the Turkish origin of the term Balkan. Linguistics and etymologists here are rather lazy – they simply label every word with disputable origin as "Turkish", thus easing their work.
On Wikipedia they connect the Balkan Peninsula with the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balkan_Province">Balkan province in Turkmenistan</a>, but they forgot to mention the Persian origin of the word.
There are many theories about the meaning and the origin of the word. Some scholars suggest it derives from the <a href="http://bg.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%91%D0%B0%D0%BB%D0%BA%D0%B0%D0%BD%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B8_%D0%BF%D0%BE%D0%BB%D1%83%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%82%D1%80%D0%BE%D0%B2#.D0.9F.D1.80.D0.BE.D0.B8.D0.B7.D1.85.D0.BE.D0.B4">PIE word for mountain</a>, but this is also very doubtful. There are theories of <a href="http://sr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%91%D0%B0%D0%BB%D0%BA%D0%B0%D0%BD%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%BE_%D0%BF%D0%BE%D0%BB%D1%83%D0%BE%D1%81%D1%82%D1%80%D0%B2%D0%BE#.D0.9E_.D0.BF.D0.BE.D1.80.D0.B5.D0.BA.D0.BB.D1.83_.D0.B8.D0.BC.D0.B5.D0.BD.D0.B0">Celtic, proto-bulgar and other</a> origins of the word. Do we have to accept only the Turkish one? :)

Heh heh. Well, now that Greece is going under and Italy looks to follow… Turkish influence will extend into the region. The southern Slavic nations, along with Albania, Romania, Greece and Turkey have the SEECP (South East European Co-operation Process) initiative. Turkey is by far the biggest economy and the largest military out of all of these nations. I would not be surprised if Turkey started to move back into its old sphere of influence in southern Europe. Given today's more pacifist mindset, broadly speaking, this will likely not be outright imperialism or even insidious influence, but it will be influence nonetheless. Turkey is also an EU member… the one with the biggest military! I just hope the Turks focus their politics into the Middle East and keep Iran in check and minimize Israel/Zionism.

Turkish influence is already significant in the Balkans. Turkish companies are largely investing all over the peninsula, this is also one of their biggest exporting markets. Recently, they even started with a cultural influences. Turkish soap operas are shown on the televisions from Greece to Slovakia, promoting their country, their lifestyle and their values. The Muslim population welcomes and accept this influence of one "fellow Muslim country". It might be another Ottoman Empire on the rise!
