My Great, Great Grandfather Fode received a commission from the Czar to fight in the Russian Army against the Turks along with lots of other German settlers who had no Slavic roots, but were willing to relocate to the Ukraine.  The Wends went to Russia for Military service, the regular Germans as Agricultural Colonists who were exempt Military service.  Many of the settlers were Menonites and Congregationalists.  Grandpa Fode was from Malo-Jaroslavitz in Besarabia, and he left Imperial Russia through Oddessa.  I have a cousin who goes back occasionally to help translate documents for historical research.
