I messed up, my surname is Ruthenian (Rusyn) it’s found all over Eastern Slav countries (my family is from Belarus). In Poland, it comes from the German name. In Ruthenia it is a just a surname because everyone in the Duchy of Lithuania had to have one. Originally my family spelled it as Biernatovich (Bernatovich) in Russian Cyrillic but in Poland, the ending has been polonised to the -wicz. Not a massive jump though. It is the same name. Geez that’s confusing sorry all :)
