I would add Anton Chekhov to this list. He wrote many short stories and comedy sketches. He was brilliant. :)

I agree with this. I have translated his story Глупый Француз and I read Дама с Собачкой in Russian for an oral exam (meaning that I had to translate parts of the story orally while my teacher made notes) – I passed with an 8 out of 10 ;D
Anyway, Chekhov is a nice read.

I also find Zoshchenko easy to read, although he tends to use a lot of colloquial terms and expressions. I recently translated his story Лимонад, which was quite fun! I translated it to Dutch though, but if anyone really wants an English translation, send me a message ;)
