Literay standard makes east Slavic languages, particularly Russian, more similar to Bulgarian than spoken. Not only there are more south Slavisms in written Russian text, but also grammar that are used in written texts differs to spoken Russian.  It’s a broad subject I can point to a lecture by a known Russian linguist. That maybe the reason it is easier for you to understand standard literary Russian and Ukrainian.
