The letter “ы/y” comes from Old Slavonic language’s: “ъі”.

In Southern Slavonic languages, it has “equated” with “i”, and it got out of use.

In Slovak, when in isolated form, both “y” and “i” are pronounced the same, however, the difference is that “i” palatalizes the preceding consonant, while “y” doesn’t.

In all of the remaining Slavic languages, this letter exists, however the pronunciation can vary. 🙂
