I thought Gora is Slavic word. I have a Croatian buddy Goran. We have names like Goran and Gorica which I believe come from Gora??? It may not be Slavic since some speculate about the meaning.

"Gora" is undoubtedly a Slavic word. It has its variations in every Slavic language. It might be connected with "gore" which means "upwards". I couldn't find any common Indo-European proto-root, the only similar word was the Greek όρος, but it might be a loanword.

What are those other speculations?
