Rus’ had many expiditions against Byzantium, Caspian cities and Caucasian Albania (present day Azerbaijan).  There were 5  raids against Constantinople some of which were succssessful, while other were not.

Rus’ was lead Varangians' elite. The earliest Paphlagonian expedition (830) may had been led by Varangians alone. One of the largest Viking’s settlements in Europe was found in Gnyozdovo which is near Smolensk due to its convinient geographical location linking major waterways. The area was settled by a union of tribes known as Krivivichs, who took part in Oleg's and Igor's compaigns against Byzantium.Probably in other compaigns as they had very close contacts with Varangians. There were other Slavic tribes taking part in Byzantiums raids too.

This is 10 th century Krivich soldier. The archeological material used to reconstruct the costume was found near Smolensk.
