As for the archaic nature of Lithuanian, Lithuianians were far from foreign infuences and therefore for a long time they have preserved the old social structure and the archaic language in which a lot of Indo-European developments have been left unchaged. The dfference between long and short vowels has been preserved, old diphthongs, the old flexion (declination especially) in which the endings are not contracted etc. William R. Schmalstieg, an american baltologist, reffered to Lithuanian language as 'a living dinosaur'.
