In some dialects сенка (senka), meaning shadow is used. Probably umbrellas were originally used for sunlight protection.

Interesting, чадор is considered a <a href="http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%DA%86%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%B1#Persian">related loanword</a> with шатор. Both are clammed to be originating from Persian çādur. Could this have common origin with Slavic <a href="http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%D1%87%D0%B0%D0%B4"&gt;чад</a>?
