Russia had been into the quest of Russian-Chinese holy grail oil deal for many years, i think for a decade, but it failed in all previous negotiations. Which means Chinese wanted a cheaper deal but Russians didnt back down. Thats what probably happend now. It would happen any way thow probably later and possibly in better terms for Russia.

Concerning gas, Russia will always have a market no matter how hard the West tries to isolate them. Both India and Japan and I'm sure many other asian countries are interested in Russian exports because they're generally cheaper. India for example has been eying the Russian oil for a while now. It would be a much better deal for India than the current one they have with Kuwait. Asian countries are growing economies with huge population. I'm surprised Russia hadn't started expanding on that market earlier.
