Admittedly very little, at least from my father’s side. My surname comes from the given name of my great great grandfather, who, along with his wife, had died in an uprising against the Ottomans in Western Thrace around the time of the First Balkan War. His son didn’t know his real surname, having been orphaned at a very young age, and as such adopted his father’s given name as a surname. From my mother’s side, however, I can trace my ancestry back further. The progenitor of my mother’s family was a Greek merchant from Thessaloniki who in the early 1700’s settled the Rhodope mountains in modern day Bulgaria and adopted a Slavic surname.
