@Dušan Thanks, that’s actually fascinating. I never really thought about the food being South Slavic, but it definitely is, as a lot of the dishes his grandmother made are food I’m familiar with from Croatia. 
 
The name is just perplexing because there’s no obvious origin and it doesn’t appear anywhere else. His grandmother’s maiden name has the same issues. Never appears outside our small area of Canada and doesn’t have a clear origin. 

Off-topic: when I met my husband all he would talk about was his grandmother’s chicken and dumplings. I had no idea what it was until 3 years into our relationship when his dad explained… paprikas and knedle. I made it straight away and I actually made my father in law tear up a little as he hadn’t tasted it since his mom passed away.
