@srdceleva not always. Well generally yes, but at some point the Russian Empire decided to “sabotage” people’s surnames in Poland, by adding the ending, to make it look less Polish. So some surnames with this ending don’t have to have Ruthene origin, although many do – especially those which consist of typically East Slavic name, for example Dmitruk.
