Three foods I grew up eating, thinking they were Czech, but they obviously weren’t.

Beef Stroganoff/Stroganov. I was a kid ignorant of his own culture, y’all.

Bierocks. Buns stuffed with ground beef, onion, and cabbage. Not Czech, German, or Russian, but a bastardization by the Volga Germans, introduced to the Kansas Czechs when Volga Germans moved into the area.

And finally…

The Reuben Sandwich. Corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and “Russian dressing” (a condiment invented by an American in New Hampshire, of all places), on rye bread. Maybe it was the ‘kraut. I never claimed to be smart.  :D
