The two phrases:
1) ” Something is awry”
2) “It/This   has gone/ (it went) awry”

cover 99% of uses of that word, if I am not mistaken (American English).

To me, it is a fancy word for “fishy”, except it feels like you can mix and match “fishy” much more with other words. I could be full of it though.

Edit: but I see now there are other uses, like out of place / tilted / lopsided. I havent personaly noticed this use, but is seems like that’s the original, primary, meaning of that word. So, what can I say man: I was an ignorant f*%k until you came along.
