I agree completely, and I have plenty of friends who could care less about where they come from, because their families have been in Texas for 150 years, and in the United States much longer than that. I’m the first generation of my family born in Texas, and the rest of them moved all around several states in the last hundred years, and 3/4 of my family were “late” arrivals for “established” Americans, arriving here from after the Civil War (late 1860s) through the 1890s. The Czech part of the family is the only part that – up until my mother – spoke the language from the land they came from, ate traditional foods, told the folktales, enjoyed the music, etc. Well, my mom still makes some of the food, but couldn’t speak more than one or two words of the language to save her life.
