It’s more about getting acquainted with the Word yourself. You know, unlike medieval Catholic and Orthodox peasants, whose only source of knowing what God wanted was whatever their local priest told them.
Btw, Protestant tradition doesn’t reject the Church fathers and the various theologians of old and of today – it simply doesn’t use them as a definite proof. That’s the whole point of sola Scriptura – only the canonical books of the Bible can be used as a basis, everything else is human interpretation and thus potentially fallible.
