I think servus and ciao are cognates, since they’re both from the same greeting meaning servant/slave of God. Latin servus and Italian schiavo or whatever it is in Venetian (I think) dialect that over time elvoved to ciao. Ciao is the most popular greeting here in Serbia.
Schiavo of course traces it’s etymology to Sclavus from Latin for Slavs, so I try to avoid this greeting.
