About Bulgarians and Russian – the older generations, the ones who went to school before the wall fell, had mandatory Russian as first foreign language, similarly to how my generation (and the following ones) have English. So the older Bulgarians might potentially know actual Russian, while the ones like me can only understand much of it (especially in written form) simply because of the closeness of the two languages (centuries of mutual influence and all that). Still, I definitely can’t claim to be able to speak Russian (or German, even though I’ve studied that one).
