Spaceman of Bohemia

by Jaroslav Kalfar (Back Bay, $16)

Jaroslav Kalfar is “most definitely” a novelist to watch, said Michael Tate in the Los Angeles Review of Books. His debut, now in paperback and a “shrewd exercise in what might be called intergalactic Gothic,” concerns the first Czech citizen to enter zero gravity. Obstacles abound for the brave astrophysicist: a failing marriage, memories of a secret-policeman father, and a hairy alien prone to psychoanalyzing. The book, though imperfect, is “simultaneously shocking, terrifying, wondrous, and funny.”
