According to Bohemian historian Josef Dobrovsky (1753–1829) and Slovak historian Pavel Jozef Šafárik (1795–1861) it was a corruption of Srbi (Serbs). Šafárik deemed that it was the oldest generic name of the Slavs.

Also, in ancient time, near the Volga river existed the people called “Serboi”, which are described as Proto-Slavs.

Is this really the old name for all Slavs, what is your opinions?

@”South Slav” those are just speculations and theories. We don’t even know where does word “Serb” come from or what it means. Tribe of Serboi is mentioned as Sarmatian tribe, it’s highly unlikely Serb was umbrella term for all Slavs. However it’s possible that Serbian name comes from that tribe if Iranian origin hypothesis of the Serbs is true.

The history of eastern Europe is very complicated. Today, most of it is inhabited by Slavs (speakers of Slavic language). But Slavs haven’t used any writing system to record their history. Until the advent of Cyril and Methodius, most of what we “know” about Slavs is from Greeks and Romans.

We don’t know how reliable their sources are, since there were lots of tribes of different origin living in the area. The first word that can be applied to all Slavs is “Slav”. Word slave comes from our name, because there used to be slavery in eastern Europe and Greeks started using our name as a synonym of “slave”. Then it was borrowed by Latin and finally by English perhaps through French (French evolved from Latin).

Eastern Europe is genetically mixed. When Kingdom of Hungary was created, they chose Latin as the official language instead of Magyar. Every ethnicity was part of one nation. And we all mixed together – Croats, Magyars, Germans, Slovenes, Slovaks, Serbs, Romanians, Rusyns… That’s why Hungarians are genetically very similar to their neighbors. This was possible only because no such thing as ethnic nationalism existed back then. The most important was the religion.

I believe the reason why Slavic languages and culture spread all over eastern Europe is mostly because Church Slavic became the 4th official language of Christian liturgy. And wherever Slavs went (or already were), their language and culture were dominant because of that, so the other tribes that lived among them assimilated over the time.

But genetically, we are all descendants of Illyrians, Thracians, Germans, Avars, Vlachs, Dacians, Huns, Albanians… of which most of them were genetically mixed even back then.

I think there were two sources, which described the look of Slavs and they were completely different. :D
So it’s hard to say something about Slavs in general before the 9th century.

I thought word Vlachs describes Romanized Illyrians, Thracians and Dacians as well as all Balkan natives other than Greeks

@Dušan But these 2 scholar were very popular in their countries. And they surely didn’t speak bullshits.

But also is question “what Slavs really called themself” ? We even don’t have any record about it. Never in history.

In the first millennium AD the concept of ethnicity did not exist among Slavs. The societies were tribal. Different Slavic tribes had different self-identification names. There were three terms applied by eastern Romans in written chronicles to the Slavs: Antes, Sclavenes and Veneti. Out of these three only Sclavenes appear to be Slavic derived from earliest known Slavic term Sloveni. Later, Sloveni became metaethnicity.
