Why do Bosniaks have Turkish words in Surnames why did our ancestors change their last names upon accepting Islam. ???December 29, 2012 at 12:36 am #408198
When you convert to Islam you're suppose to change your name I think. For example, Cat Stevens changed his name to Yusuf Islam when he converted. In other cases people got their surnames from their titles, and since they were living in the Ottoman Empire the titles were in Turkish (e.g. Begović, Hodžić)December 29, 2012 at 2:13 am #408199
Right, think of Mohamed Ali who was previously Cassius Clay. Or the Islamic converts gave their children Islamic sounding names as well and that just carried on through the generations. Still, I know plenty of Bosniaks with non-Muslim sounding names like Filipovic. Likewise there are Croats with Islamic sounding names like 'Asanovic' and ton of surnames that are Bosnjak, just check out a typical Zagreb phonebook. Jesus! You guys are taking over!
