In Slovakia, one the beggining of the May, each city, town and village builds their own May Tree, known as máj. It's a long trunk stripped of bark, on which top is attached little spruce, birch or fir, decorated with colorful ribbons. On the end of the month is máj removed.

We call this tradition stavanie mája.

Nowaday each village, town and even city have one of more big máje, mostly placed near to town hall or other important building in city (in my city it's right under the castle). While in bigger cities it's not specifically celebrated and the main builder is mostly crane, in smaller towns and villages people build them completely by themselves (without using machines) and often is combined with celebration and performances of local folkore ensembles.

In past were functions of máje different – youth boys used to place them in the front of the house in which lived girl they liked. Plus, these máje were and are much smaller, mostly just little trees without branches on its trunk and decorated with ribbons. Nowaday you can still see in fronts of some houses little máje, but mostly they're just decorations that prepared people living in that house by themselves.

In Slovenia we have maypole tradition as well. It is caled Mlaj. In communist times Mlaj was hijacked as symbol of workers so people are using it for Workers Day now. Also mlaj is used by some for celebration of 50th, 70th etc. birthday. However traditional use of Mlaj isnt entirely death.

In old times it was erected only in certain important events such as summer solstice where they also made bonefire besides maypole, it was also used in religious celebrations, completion of building like example house, barn etc. and it is still used for marriage.

Here are pictures of typical slovene maypole.
