Dance Ensembles of Belarus

For many centuries, Belarusian songs and folklore have been one of the strongest, most developed forms of national art, playing an important role in the preservation of national traditions and acting as an inspiration to Belarusian professional musicians (composers and performers).

To this day the Belarusian people have managed to preserve certain age-old rites and customs: for example, songs for springtime and Easter, ritual songs about rusalki or water-nymphs, songs celebrating birth. Indeed, the sources of Belarusian folk art are as inexhaustible today as they were many years ago. Different Belarusian folk bands help to understand a real Belarusian soul. The best of then are:

BELAYA RUS` (WHITE RUSSIA) FOLK DANCE AND MUSIC GROUP
The folk dance and music company BELAYA RUS` (White Russia), created in the Palace of youth culture in 1946 and supports the glory of the Belarusian choreography. The company honours the best traditions of the Belarusian folklore which enrich the content of the program and form the basis of folk art.

The repertoire of the company is based on the dances of diverse regions of Belarus, which are remarkable for their traditions, character, manner of performance, colour spectrum of the costumes. The use of these distinctions makes the program of the company more varied and fascinating. Anatol Karpovich has been the permanent director of the company already for more than 20 years. The creative success and victories at various contests and festivals are connected with his name.

The most often performed and loved by the audience dances are Areli (swing) , Putanka-Rasputanka, Straw Boys, Awakening. Putanka-Rasputanka uses folk motives, popular games. Usually the performance ends with the ballet theme Karuzel (merry-go-round) where group rotation gives the possibility to every dancer to show his virtuosity in astonishing tricks. Choreographer Anatol Karpovich expresses understanding of the human character, knowledge of national colouring, desire to expose the idea of Belarusian culture in the whole European context in his dances.

The repertoire of the company isn’t limited to Belarusian folk dances. Several Russian dances (Korobeiniki, Barynia…) and foreign dances (Gipsy dance, Irish dance, Estonian dance…) give the possibility to get acquainted with the choreographic culture of these countries.

The traditions of decoration of Belarusian national costume have an ancient history. The weaving methods, peculiarities of embroidery, the length of the parts of the costumes, laws of colours’ combination, ornamental pattern have been formed during the centuries. The famous weaving and embroidery manufactories of Slutsk widely used multicoloured technique with luxurious vegetable and geometric ornamental patterns. All of this is reflected in the company’s costumes: the belts on the shirts are embroidered with ear ornamental pattern, aprons and laps of the skirts are abundantly decorated with embroidery. The orchestra consists of 10 brilliant musicians. The beautiful melodies of 3 violins, bayan, dulcimer, flute, clarinet, 2 guitars and percussion will bring you a lot of pleasure.

During more than 60 years of its existence the ensemble became widely known. Numerous shoots on TV, orchestra concerts on radio contribute to the company’s popularity. The mastery of the Belarusian artists is appreciated at its true value in the countries all over the world.

The audiences of Germany, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Greece, Poland, USA, Latin America, the Netherlands, Ireland have acclaimed the artists. The great success accompanied the company’s performances at folk festivals in France: in Grand-Mote, Carentan, Normandie, Lille, Cherbourg, Bagnols-en-Fort, Saint Felin d'Avall, Ville de Lorgues, Confolens. More than 5000 spectators gave the ensemble a warm welcome in the music hall Zenit (France). We hope that the acquaintance with the company BELAYA RUS` will help you to get in touch with one of the most ancient Slavic cultures.

    CHABAROK
The dance ensemble CHABAROK has been created in 1986 at Minsk palace of children and youth. The ensemble's name is very symbolical. CHABAROK (thyme) is such a fragrant herb which also possesses medicinal properties. And when you are in a depressed mood, music and dances of the ensemble will present to you a good mood, and all the illnesses disappear. And as the answer artists receive the most open smiles, generous applause of the spectators.

The achievements of the ensemble CHABAROK are the result of constant and laborious work of the children and the teachers. The ensemble's "engine" is its permanent art director Natalia Diagel, her talent and high professionalism combined with vigourand purposefulness have yielded the fine results. It was her who has chosen the first kiddies in 1986, who has taught them to dance and has imparted them love to what they are engaged in, probably therefore many of them have already become the professional dancers and choreographers, have continued training and now work in the best professional collectives of the country.

The teachers of the ensemble work under the author's program directed on the advancing training and development of children from 5 till 18 years and older. Today in the ensemble there are 4 concert casts of different age, 250 participants from 5 till 22 years old, 5 teachers, the orchestra of 5 professional musicians. The concert costumes of the artists are very various, colourful, with the rich embroidery of the Belarusian national ornaments.

The ensemble's performances are noted by the extraordinary sincerity, high professional mastery and scenic culture. Each concert number is remarkable for its temperament and cheerfulness, emotionality and rich palette of colours. The Belarusian folklore lays at the basis of the dancing repertoire. The playful national dances Juravel, Funny boys, a round dance of Lelchicy with hand bells, cause delight of the lively public. Verabeika, Zabka, Pcholka, Putanka, Hovanka, Village polka – these and other dances attach both young actors and spectators to a vivifying spring of original national culture. Except the game children's compositions on the basis of the Belarusian folklore, there are also dances of nations of the world in the ensemble's repertoire. There are some songs in the repertoire of the ensemble and the special dance and musical program is prepared for the performance in churches.

CHABAROK is a welcome guest everywhere. It was applauded in Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Czechia, Slovakia, Germany, Finland, Turkey, France, Spain, England, Serbia, Macedonia and Italy. The impressions of the organizers of tours always remain very enthusiastic after their performances. Germans, Frenchmen, Spaniards opened Belarus for themselves, as the country with surprisingly talented children and rich national culture, though many of them even did not know before where exactly our country is situated. The collective performed in the most various places, starting with the houses for aged people and finishing with the performances in the clubs of the millionaires.

The acknowledgement of the high level of the professional skills of the collective are numerous victories at competitions and festivals of the republican and international levels. The result of the work of the collective is not only in high professional achievements. The participation in charitable actions became the good tradition for the pupils of the collective. The concrete affairs of the teachers of the ensemble bring up in children such qualities as aspiration to help people, to empathize, desire to be good. Since 1991 the ensemble was the participant of the charitable action «Children – to children» many times in Germany and in other countries. All children of the ensemble are very creative, talented and beautiful, it is easy to find common language with the children. The most important thing, they understand, what they are engaged in and they have a desire to work and get pleasure of they do.

The creativity of the ensemble CHABAROK has brought the considerable contribution to the revival of national choreographic art of Belarus.
