Montenegro's parliamentary speaker Ranko Krivokapic will visit Moscow and Kiev this week as part of the OSCE's efforts to help mediate in the Ukrainian crisis.

Krivokapic, in his capacity as the current president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE, will first meet officials in Russia, then go to Ukraine, he announced on Saturday.

“I will try to enable a dialogue with Moscow and Kiev even though it is an effort. We know how hard it was to establish a dialogue between our fraternal peoples, the Croats and Serbs, and the Bosniaks and Serbs,” Krivokapic said ahead of the trip.

He said that the international community should guarantee the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine – a reference to Russia’s annexation of Crimea this month.

“At these moments which are especially hard for Ukraine and its people, we need additional wisdom and carefulness in decision-making,” Krivokapic said after a meeting with the Ukrainian ambassador to Podgorica Oksana Slusarenko last week.

Montenegro has openly taken the new government in Kiev’s side in the crisis.

On March 19, Montenegro endorsed the EU’s decision to impose sanctions on former Ukraine president Viktor Yanukovych and his cabinet.

The EU decision freezes the funds and other assets of former Ukranian officials identified as being responsible for the abuse of state funds, as well as those responsible for human rights violations.

A week later, Montenegro supported the UN General Assembly’s resolution which declared that the annexation of Crimea by Russia was illegal. More than 20 countries did not participate in the vote, among them Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

    Good job Montenegro!
