    yes, it predates Christianity
    the Church was somewhat against it a while back because of its pagan roots



    In Bulgaria, besides the fire-jumping, there was also a tradition of launching fire “arrows”, as well as the so-called “hamkane” (a piece of white halva or egg is tied with a red thread and the members of the family, nowadays mostly the children, try to catch it without using their hands).



    I’ve heard of the tying an egg with thread tradition. But I am not really sure if it is strictly practiced in Bulgaria, we might do it for a different holiday though.



    We do the “amkanje” thing, too, though I’m not sure it’s practiced all over the country. @NikeBG I didn’t know you guys use alva!
