Arkona was an ancient Temple Fortress on the former Slavic Island of Rugia (nowadays known as Rügen, Germany) in the Baltic Sea. The temple was dedicated to the ancient Slavic God Svantevit, the four-headed God of war, fertility and abundance. Svantevit had two heads at the front and two at the back and had his characteristic horn of abundance.

In 1168 AD, Arkona was destroyed by Danish Christian invaders.

Like the temple of Swaro?yc in Radogoszcz, the temple of Sventovit in Arkona was wooden. Inside, the walls were adorned with sculptures and paintings. The temple was also a treasury and was guarded by 300 horseman. It was sacked in 1168 by a Christian duke of the Danes – Valdemar I den Store; who organized a crusade against pagan Slavs together with bishop Absalon, here supervising the toppling of the statue of Sventovithttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3f/Bishop_Absalon_topples_the_god_Svantevit_at_Arkona.PNG” />

Hello.  I had read once that Arkona was reputed to have been the site of an Apollonian temple, which overlooked the Baltic.
Has anyone heard of this?

Merged onthewingsofeagles's thread "Arkona, the site of an Apollonian temple?!" with Perun's existing one.

Apollonian as in temple in which there as an oracle, or as in temple of Greek god Apollo?
If it's the later, no there wasn't temple of Apollo.

Apparently the temple housed an important horse oracle, the behaviour of a white horse could decide peace or war. And i think this information came from Greek historian so i wouldn't be surprise if he connected Apollo with our Svantovit .

According to Saxo Grammaticus, temple was a log structure with red roof, surrounded by a yard and fence, carved and painted with symbols. The inner sanctum contained a statue of Svantovit with four heads and throats facing in opposite directions. I think Svantovit from Zbrucz could give us idea how exactly the statue looked like.
