Massively disappointing speeches by 3 political opposition leaders (Klitschko, Yatseniuk, Tiahnybok) during the "Viche" demonstration on Maidan today. But this day is far from over! For the first time since the start of regular Sunday demos, after the speeches, people did not disperse.
Lutsenko, Hrytsenko, Parubiy, Poroshenko, Ruslana and other "moral authorities" were not on the stage – unknown why not.
Avtomaidan (Bulatov, Poyarkov, Hrytsenko) were on the stage, and called for "a single leader". When one was not proclaimed, they started organizing a mass movement of people from Independence Square via European Square (where their cars are parked) towards the Parliament building – guarded by riot police. Clashes have not yet materialized, but are expected.
Conclusion: 3 opposition party leaders are no longer in control of the protests. New leaders will emerge from today's events. Today, a real revolution has begun…Prof. Mychailo Wynnyckyj, Kyiv

The 9th Sunday rally in Ukraine has turned violent.

About an hour ago, Ukrainian police brought a water cannon in sub-zero temperatures.

Clashes with riot police ongoing at the base of Hrushevskoho street (near Dynamo stadium, edge of European Square). Protesters donning gas masks – expecting tear gas.

Klitschko is standing between most aggressive protesters and riot police trying to calm emotions. His head is white after being sprayed from a fire extinguisher
From the looks of things, the front line of protests (those attacking the riot police) are either provocateurs, or right wing radicals – members of "pravyj sektor" (a more radical group than Svoboda) were seen today on Maidan with sticks and wooden shields. These people are now on the front line of clashes with internal troops (not Berkut) who, for the moment, are showing restraint.
Another group of protesters has just arrived on the other side of Parliament (likely having traveled there by subway to Arsenalna station). For the moment this flanking manouver remains peaceful. ~Prof. Mychailo Wynnyckyj, Kyiv

    Predictions:

Events likely to unfold like this (prediction as of 16:45 Sunday – Kyiv time):

    1) Berkut riot police will disperse demonstrations on European Square and then will attack the main Maidan through the barricades (massive casualties expected)
    2) Tomorrow Yanukovych will proclaim martial law in the city of Kyiv
    3) Opposition leaders will attempt to block ratification of martial law vote in Parliament but will fail; western leaders will condemn Yanukovych decision in strongest terms
    4) Leaders of AvtoMaidan (Koba, Poyarkov, Hrytsenko, and others) will be arrested
    5) After several days of quiet, Kyiv's population will rise again – under whose leadership, time will tell…

Dazed by tear gas, Vitali Klitschko made a quick video address to Yanukovych urging him to stop the violence. Now, he is reportedly on his way to President Yanukovych to negotiate a possible truce, to stop the violence.

Vitaliy Klychko on @HromadskeTV a few minutes ago: negotiations or civil war. He hopes no civil war. But Yanukovych doesn't listen to opposition. (Klychko met with Yanukovych today.)

Kyiv currently looks like a war zone. Molotov cocktails flying, police buses on fire.

How bloody is it? still a protest or a civil war?

There is a link to live stream in the post above, so you can judge yourself. Not a civil war of course as it is only Kiev, as I know. No one died at the moment thankfully, but the protest is quite violent.

What is your opinion on all this Svarožić? from a Russian perspective?

It's not a full-blown civil war, but more like a very violent riot. The last report I saw 100s were reported injured, some critical, both protesters and police. Some police and protesters were set on fire in the beginning stages of the riot. Police have shot some protesters with rubber bullets.

The riot shows no signs of slowing down. More people keep coming.

Well, apparently there are two ways of describing Russian point of view: official and people's.

Sure Putin's having a terrible butthurt right now, as Yanukovich is his marionette and also he definitely do not want such scenario here in Moscow.

I believe narod have a right to choose it's governers, so in this case I only can say bravo to Ukrainians. It's pity Russians are totally frozen to do smth alike.

Another thing that one of the reasons of these recent protests was that issue with Ukraine entering EU. I'm not sure it is a good idea, well, let's just ask our Polish and Slovak friends here, how do they like it, being a part of EU. But still, I see no reason for Russia to feel sad about Ukraine in EU, as after some time they will realise entering EU will not give them wealth or whatever in a moment. It's just like after USSR collapse, everyone thought wow, capitalism, tomorrow we will drink only cola and drive only foreign cars..NOPE. EU is not the solution for all the problems, but will even provide a row of new problems for Ukraine. Off-topic sorry :)

If these Ukrainian youth think that a pro-West stance and EU are a good thing for them then they are living in a dream world.
