Slovene anthems

I't not like we change our anthem every 20 years or so, but I's interesting how we came to the anthem we have today. Of course, we can't start there but have to go all the way back to the time of the March Revolution. Like elswhere in the Slavic world, Slovenes got nationalistic and Pan-Slavism was on his march. We had no own national anthem then, but Hej Slovani (Hey Slavs) with Slovene text was sung widely.

Here the text in Slovene:

Hej Slovani, naša reč
slovanska živo klije
dokler naše verno srce
za naš narod bije
Živi, živi, duh slovanski,
bodi živ na veke,
grom in peklo, prazne vaše
proti nam so steke
Naj tedaj nad nami
strašna burja se le znese,
skala poka, dob se lomi,
zemlja naj se strese
Bratje, mi stojimo trdno
kakor zidi grada,
črna zemlja naj pogrezne
tega, kdor odpada!

(You don't need a video since you all know it  :P )

After the First World War the song "Naprej zastava slave" became the anthem of Slovenes and was partualy intergrated in the Royal Yugoslav anthem. The song was also popular among Slovene Partisans and stood our anthem in SFRJ (Yugoslavia). Today it is the anthem of the Slovene Armed Forces. It is a song that really rises fighting spirit.

Anthem of the Slovenian Armed Forces

In 1989 the time of big changes came and the old anthem was replaced with a new one in 1990 already. It remained the anthem of the Republic of Slovenia untill today. Literary "A Toast", or Zdravljica in Slovene, was written in 1844 by our greatest poet France Prešeren. Let's face it, he had a drinking problem, so a drinking song suits him and also most of the Slovenes…  ;D Anyhow, it's a peaceful anthem with no real hatred in it. Only the seventh stanza is counted as the actual anthem though the poem itself has eight stanzas. Originally, the poem is written in the way that every stanza forms the shape of a wine glass. This can be seen on the picture:

The original name was "Zdravica" and not Zdravljica. It became such after the "Serbisation" of the Slovene language. The melody was written in 1905 by the composer Stanko Premrl. Here the whole text:

1.

Prijatlji! odrodile,
The vintage, friends, is over,

so trte vince nam sladkó,
And here sweet wine makes, once again,

ki nam oživlja žile,
Sad eyes and hearts recover

srce razjásni in oko,
Puts fire into every vein.

ki utopi
Drowns dull care

vse skrbi,
Everywhere

v potrtih prsih up budi!
And summons hope out of despair.

2.

Komú narpred veselo
To whom with acclamation

zdravico, bratje! čmo zapét'?
And song shall we our first toast give?

Bog našo nam deželo,
God save our land and nation

Bog živi ves slovenski svet,
And all Slovenes where'er they live,

brate vse,
Who own the same

kar nas je

Blood and name,

sinov sloveče matere!
And who one glorious Mother claim.

3.

V sovražnike 'z oblakov
Let thunder out of heaven

rodú naj naš'ga trešči gróm,
Strike down and smite our wanton foe!

prost, ko je bil očakov,
Now, as it once had thriven,

naprej naj bo Slovencov dom;
May our dear realm in freedom grow.

naj zdrobé
May fall the last

njih roké
Chains of the past

si spone, ki jim še težé!
Which bind us still and hold us fast!

4.

Edinost, sreča, sprava
Let peace, glad conciliation,

k nam naj nazaj se vrnejo;
Come back to us throughout the land!

otrók, kar ima Slava,
Towards their destination

vsi naj si v róke sežejo,
Let Slavs henceforth go hand-in-hand!

de oblast
Thus again

in z njo čast,
Will honour reign

ko préd, spet naša bode last!
To justice pledged in our domain.

5.

Bog žívi vas Slovenke,
To you, our pride past measure,

prelepe, žlahtne rožice;
Our girls! Your beauty, charm and grace!

ni take je mladenke,
There surely is no treasure

ko naše je krvi dekle;
To equal maidens of such race.

naj sinóv
Sons you'll bear,

zarod nov
Who will dare

iz vas bo strah sovražnikov!
Defy our foe no matter where.

6.

Mladenči, zdaj se pije
Our hope now, our to-morrow –

zdravica vaša, vi naš up;
The youths – we toast and toast with joy.

ljubezni domačije
No poisonous blight or sorrow

noben naj vam ne usmŕti strup;
Your love of homeland shall destroy.

ker po nas
With us indeed

bode vas
You're called to heed

jo sŕčno bránit klical čas!
Its summons in this hour of need.

7.

Živé naj vsi naródi,
God's blessing on all nations,

ki hrepené dočakat dan,
Who long and work for that bright day,

da, koder sonce hodi,
When o'er earth's habitations

prepir iz svéta bo pregnan,
No war, no strife shall hold its sway;

da rojak
'Who long to see

prost bo vsak,
That all men free,

ne vrag, le sosed bo mejak!
No more shall foes, but neighbours be.

8.

Nazadnje še, prijatlji,
At last to our reunion –

kozarce zase vzdignimo,
To us the toast! Let it resound,

ki smo zato se zbrat'li,
Since in this great communion

ker dobro v srcu mislimo;
By thoughts of brotherhood we're bound

dókaj dni
May joyful cheer

naj živí
Ne'er disappear

vsak, kar nas dobrih je ljudi!
From all good hearts now gathered here.

Zdravljica – slovenska himna

To me it's a beautiful anthem, especially because it's one out of few that don't spread hatred towards others. It's a peaceful poem, like we are peaceful people – in general.

Howerer, if I'd propose a poem for the Slovene anthem, I'd choose Slovenec sem, which was written by Gustav Ipavec – he lived in the same county as I do. For me it's the the poem/song with the highest patriotism shown from a side af a Slovene on paper. I thinks it's beautiful.

Slovenec sem! Slovenec sem!
Tako je mati d’jala,
Ko me je dete pestovala,
ko me je dete pestovala.
Zatorej dobro vem:
Slovenec sem! Slovenec sem!

Slovenec sem! Slovenec sem!
Od zibeli do groba
Ne gane moja se zvestoba,
ne gane moja se zvestoba!
S ponosom reči smem:
Slovenec sem, Slovenec sem!

Slovenec sem

When it comes to melody, I like Slovenec sem more. Will you change your anthem together with flag? ;D

Croatia National Anthem English lyrics

This is the current Cro anthem.

I wish it would be this though:

Thompson & prijatelji – Lijepa li si

No wonder, I love Slovenec sem. Sure, we'll change it "po svetem Nikóli", if you know what I mean. ;D
