But for about a week, in Slovenia there was HELL … The first snow this winter was quite intense. About 50 cm – in many places a lot more – which can be problematic on it's own and after a few days žled, which is some sort of ice-rain. Over night, the country was put in ice. The railway in some parts of Slovenia stopped working, causing huge problems for the harbor in Koper. Over the days it only got worse, turning forests into death traps, cutting off whole villages from the rest of the world. Under the imense weight of the ice the electricity lines broke, leaving 1/4 of the country without electricity (no lights, no gadgets, often also no cooking or heating). The country asked for help, whick we recieved from the Germans, Austrians and Czech, who brought numerous aggregates, which of course come more than handy.

    the ice trap

The worst situation (still) is western and southwestern parts of Slovenia, especially around Idrija, where many people literally are trapped in their houses. One can't drive the roads, the only one allowed and able is the Army in armoured vehicles. By some reports about 60 % of the woods in the area are destroyed. The Slovenian Armed Forces, volunteer firefighters and many other services are doing their best to help the people. Not even the Zoo in Ljubljana was spared. The ice resulted many damaged enclosers and two lynxes managed to escape and kill a chamois.

Now, the weather seems to warm up, leaving us with the devastation. And there will be no time for resting. All the damaged trees need to be removed soon, otherwise the bark beetle may cause even more damage (if that's possible …), the melting snow and ice may cause floods in many areas, the railway will need a lot of repairing and god knows when the electricity lines will be in tact again. In France it took them 2 months to repair them after a similar event. And since we're, well … Slovenia. :-

And some more pictures. As much the forests may look beautiful, they are a deadly trap of nature … The ice is everywhere.

Great pics and the video really shows how intense it is, though it was filmed in some outback, where  is that? The damage is equal to a war zone. Bigger than in our last war, only that this time there're no  dead, luckily … My area was spared of the worst, thank god.
