Meet Žarko – Bosnian Robinson Crusoe Who Is Living Like A Modern Caveman

He was celebrating the new year with a barbecue he prepared for himself, and he really liked it. And yes, of course, with rakija, or as he named it: “something’ spicy”. He gets visited by his friends every now and then.  Even though he gets a lot of visits from his friends, and his only son, his best friends are of course his beloved dogs. He can’t imagine living without them. Žarko likes being called Robinson Crusoe reports Radio Free Europe. As he explains: “Well, that is great! He was the captain of the ship, and everyone but him died”. He doesn’t even own a TV, and he hates politics, especially the Bosnian politics. He says he will maybe one day try to go to Germany again, but for now, he is still living in a cage.

He would collect food from the people who threw it away. That is what I call recycling! He was facing some problems, as he says; he had to clean every single day because in the winter was lots of snow, which would sometimes cover his door. The worst period he experienced was when it was raining, because the water came into the cage, and it was not as pleasant to be in the cage while raining.

“They are living in apartments and they have everything, and I have nothing, but I am still in a better position than they.” – Žarko says while being interviewed.

He learned to sleep on the temperatures 25C below zero, and would never get sick. It was a true miracle. The people who visited him were almost always sick, but he was made of steel.

He used to have an apartment in Zenica, and he even lived in Germany. However, his period of living in Germany wasn’t great. The authorities banned him from this country even six times! That was because he was staying in Germany illegally. But, he never stopped dreaming to come back to Germany, like all the Bosnians. The Bosnian Robinson Crusoe is even an artist.

When he was young, he discovered his talent for painting. He worked as a local painter, and many have said that he was really great at it! Although he hasn’t painted in almost 25 years, he is eager to be a painter again, as soon as he gets back to the civilization. He is optimistic in getting away from the cage and living with his son in Busovača, a city near Zenica. But, that isn’t a fixed plan. He still likes the cage better than people.
