EASTERN SLOVAKIA: Rusyns from 106 villages and towns raised a bronze statue of Prince Laborec (5,4 m – 1 800 kg) above a village Habura. In the footstall there is soil from all of those villages and towns as a symbol of one Rusyn land. Mikuláš Juščík, mayor of Habura, said: “His sword is touching the ground which means that this is our Rusyn land – we will fight for it and protect it.”
Prince Laborec was a ruler of the Užhorod principality in the 9th century AD. He died after a fight against Hungarians on a river Sviržava (now Laborec) in 903.
