Folk embroidery is one of the most distinctive demonstrations of talent the Slovak nation was endowed with. It was predominantly a matter of women, in which they put their craving for beauty or inspiration from their surroundings. It developed from plain technique of connecting seams on domestic canvas since the very beginning of clothing history.

Each region has its own type and lavishness of embroidery. It differed based on the local conditions, availability of materials or other impacts. National awakeners saw the soul of the nation in embroidery. It captured world’s attention during the exhibitions in Vienna, Paris or Moscow.

The heyday of embroidery in Slovakia was in the 19th and 20th century. In the western part of Slovakia the pre-sketch embroidery prevailed.

Geometrical patterns were dominant in Central Slovakia. Weaving was typical of the Eastern part of Slovakia, embroidery was rare.
