Stunning Slavic Mural Was Painted in Ukrainian Capital Kiev by Guido Van Helten

‘Communist architecture seems to be a perfect canvas for street-art’

Communist architecture is also known as ‘brutalist architecture’, to most people it looks pretty bland and unimaginative, however it seems that it is a awesome canvas for street-art. Ukrainians have recognized this potential and invited Guido Van Helten, a famous street artists to bring some color to their neighborhoods. Guido is now in Eastern Europe and he finished this piece somewhere on the streets of Kiev in Ukraine. Coming from Australia he had a problem with severe Eastern European cold weather but it didn’t stop him from working on this mega-long building to create this photo-realistic portrait of a young woman and what looks like to a traditional Eastern European jacket ornamented with beautiful red patterns. Amazing!

Marina Marchenko in the town of Avdiyivka, Ukraine, teacher Ukrainian language at the local school. We visited her in her classroom on my first day in Avdiyivka and I took her portrait. In 2014 her husband went to collect water and was wounded in the leg in crossfire. The town of Avdiyivka has been the site of occasional shelling of civilian areas and tense fighting since 2014 and continues to be a hotspot in Ukraines ATO zone and ongoing war. The bricked up damaged apartment to the right of this photo shows where a rocket entered and an elderly woman and younger child was killed. * The children of her class asked me if I was scared to be here in Avdiyivka, ‘are you scared to live here?’ I asked them back, They all yelled in reply ‘Noooo!’ * Coordinated by @artunitedus project of Ukraine

Painted in Fort Smith, Arkansas USA for @unexpectedfs curated by @justkidsofficial . * Here the legends of the old west resonate from its history as a border town with the former Indian Territory now Oklahoma. Suggesting the characters from traditional notions of the American Wild West mythology, I was interested with this work to explore the idea of the American hero and character. * Here represented is Ed a Native American from the Apache Tribe, Kristina a young African American woman who runs her own business and Gene Beckham a former employee who worked at this grain elevator for 70 years immediately after returning from the Second World War, retiring last year. * Thanks to all who assisted me in this work including a shoutout to Bob, Beth, Pat and @b4_flight for hanging with me onsite for some very long days!
