The Best Waterfalls In Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a country of wondrous natural formations, picturesque reliefs and a rich history spanning back to the distant year of 681. This Slavic country has a total of 10 official UNESCO World Heritage Sites and in addition to those, 14 other sites currently take place on the UNESCO tentative list. Bulgaria is a land of many waterfalls, albeit not having something as grand as the Niagara Falls. Check out some of the best ones below.

The Krushunski Vodopadi (Krushuna Falls) is a set of multiple waterfalls formed over a bed of densely set limestone travertines. They’re located near the municipality town of Lovech and the tallest one falls from 15 meters. Around the 13th-14th century the area has served as a home to Hesychast monks. The hiking trails to the falls include well-beaten paths and a handful of bridges, which make reaching the waterfalls easy as pie even for families with small children.

Also known as the Hotnishki Falls, the Kaya Bunar waterfall is a lovely destination nestled just outside the former Bulgarian capital Veliko Tarnovo. Not only does this proximity make it ideal for tourists wishing to visit the falls and the Tsarevets castle complex in Veliko Tarnovo in one trip, but the short eco trail leading to the falls also contributes to the waterfalls’ popularity by offering a plethora of gorgeous natural landscapes and an ease of access.

Located outside the tiny town of Tvarditsa the waterfall Skokovete is an easily accessible natural formation either by foot or by car. The name literally means “the jumps” and it’s derived from the appearances of three sets of small waterfalls, which look as though they’re “jumping” into one another in a curved, skittish matter. Due to the fact that the falls are tiny in terms of size and they’re nestled deep into the mountains they aren’t a popular tourist attraction, but that only makes them ideal for visitors wishing to avoid overcrowded destinations.

Gracing the Rila National Park with its gorgeousness, the Skakavitsa waterfall is situated nearly 2,000 meters above sea level and its waters drop from a height of around 70 meters. The waterfall is stunning all year round, even throughout the freezing winters. The area’s widespread popularity is owed not only to the majestic waterfall, but also to the venerable, century-old forest surrounding it, which is composed out of white fir trees that are endemic to the region. The notorious 7 Rila Lakes are located nearby, so if you happen to find yourself in the area, you should definitely visit both destinations.

If you’ve never heard of the Raysko Praskalo (literally meaning “heavenly sprinkler”) before, you’re in for a treat. This one is the highest waterfall on the entire Balkan Peninsula! Dropping from the stunning height of 124.5 meters, it’s neither vast, nor falls into a limpid lake, but it’s still a magnificent sight to see. Nestled in between the depths of the Central Balkan National Park this waterfall reaches its ultimate peak of flow in the summer.

Last, but not least, is the Bachkovski waterfall situated in the Bachkovo area. It’s extremely easy to access and its trail can be crossed for around 15 minutes or so. The waterfall on its own offers lively sceneries and due to the flock of tourists the local government has equipped the area with benches and tables suitable for picnics. The waterfall is located near the historical Bachkovo Monastery, which was established in the distant 1083 – a key figure in the Bulgarian cultural heritage and the second largest ancient monastery in the country. If you’re a fan of the outdoors and you like exploring new sights, but you’re not too fond of mountaineering, this waterfall is a great option for you and your entire family.
